I paint in oils because I love the richness of color and the way oil paint mixes and moves on the canvas. I like its mutability and freshness and how it becomes one of the subjects of my painting.
I am fascinated with the passage of time. I enjoy painting portraits of people who show in their faces that they have experienced life. I love the old sections of cities and old industrial sites. I find a unique beauty in them, sensing their rich past, distressed present and unknown future.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and love the quality of light and color here. Recently I've been painting a series of small studies of the area close to my home.
I have been a photographer most of my life. I love the way shadows fall and reflections sparkle. Though I use my photographs for reference, my paintings are not about photo-realism. Instead they are expressions of my feelings about the passage of time and the world around me.
